Another Chance to be Unselfish Today

Later, members of the WhoWeAreInstead (Philippine-based community of Jars of Clay fans), with assistance from Alay Pag-Asa, are going to party with kids from an urban poor community in Mandaluyong. There's going to be gift-giving, games, snacks, singing and definitely lots of laughter. Plus a surprise appearance of the Pirates (members of Black Pearl Philippines, to which I also belong). I'll be dressed as a pirate and I'll host the program together with fellow WWAI member and friend, Fer. This is gonna rock!

I love partying with kids, especially with those who'd benefit from it more than others. They make me feel good about being able to actually do something to make other people happy, for a change. They help me forget about my own selfish concerns. Simply put, I learn to be a person for the world, not just for my self. Oh, to see the world again in the eyes of a child!

Kudos to my friends from WhoWeAreInstead for organizing this event. You guys remind me to always have hope in humanity. You help me see that when one's life is touched by God's hands, one can't help but spread the sunshine around. That there's always enough for everybody.

For now I gotta catch some Zzzz's, or the kids will have a zombie for a host. I'm so excited!!!

Pirates Really Can't be Trusted

Was browsing for pirate costumes when I saw this image. I had to post it here. Really hilarious! :D

Because I wasn't able to join the crew at MOA today (they must be having a blast this very moment sniff..sniff..), I spent the rest of the afternoon browsing for pirate costumes and feeling sorry over and over again. And then I saw this image. Really hilarious! :D

Switchfoot Live in Manila

Greaaaaaaaaaaaaaat night!!! I should say that this concert moved me. I've realized that I'm bigger a fan than I thought I was.
head and dance like crazy.

I love Switchfoot! I love the messages that they send through their songs. I love the fact that 20% of the ticket sales will go to the International Justice Mission. And I love having to share this night with my friends.

Yancy, bro! Thanks so much for taking 90% of the concert pics. You rock!

Here's the playlist for all those who didn't make it, so that you'll know what you missed! (I'm so evil nyaarr...)

Oh! Gravity - Yancey and I were betting on which song they'd open the concert with. I thought it was Stars, Yancy thought Awakening. But Oh! Gravity is perfect!

Stars - love the video, love the song, love the energy when it was played in the concert. Everyone just pointed up to the stars.

Dare You to Move - emotional and relevant; it was the theme of the concert.

American Dream - the band froze for a couple of minutes in not-so-comfy positions. It was like watching Switchfoot wax statues on stage. Needless to say, the crowd went wild!

This is Your Life - my personal fave, my themesong.

Learning to Breathe

Chem 6A - Jon:"for those who've been with us for quite a while"

More Than Fine - a rockin great song!

Gone

On Fire - Yancy's fave, a really inspiring song.

The Cowboy Song - terribly funny start

Awakening - the song currently receiving the most airplay these days (I hear it every two to three hours on Jam 88.3). LOVE IT! it's like a totally new Switchfoot playing, save for Jon's unmistakeable vocals.

Meant to Live - my 6-year-old's fave. Socially relevant, inspiring song.

Only Hope No, Switchfoot did not cover it. They made it!

We Are One Tonight - perfect way to end a fabulous evening.

Just in case you're wondering...

What keeps me on my toes nowadays?

Mending my heart from broken friendships, trying my very best to move on.

Perfecting the balancing act of trying so hard to stick to the rules and sacrificing my time and my time for my daughter.

Raising a thinking, processing individual who's starting to show signs of early-onset adolescence (she behaves like a teenager sometimes). If my daughter will behave like me when I was in my pre-teen, I'll be worried sick.

Making ends meet, saving enough for a new home (I'm practically a single mom).

New, exciting, intellectual friends. =)

Trying so hard not to fall inlove.

Praying so hard that I have at least 30 hours in a day, while the rest of the world get 24, just to be able to catch up on sleep and books.

==========
Press Release:

New Worlds: Transformed
Fans gather to celebrate at Powerplant in July

From July 9 to 15, there will be another celebration of fandom in New Worlds: Transformed, to be held at the Power Plant Mall at Rockwell.

The New Worlds Alliance (NWA), an organization of fan groups focused primarily on fantasy, science fiction, horror and superheroes, will be holding exhibits and activities that showcase the various ways they show their love for their favorite shows, books and authors.  Highlighting the event is the opening of the film adaptation of JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, a week before the release of the last book of the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

This is the power of fandom.  Who else can dictate to large production outfits what movie to make next?  Many of the recent box-office hits were either fantasy, such as Pirates of the Carribean and Shrek, or about superheroes like Spiderman and the Fantastic Four; all of these are highly successful franchises that have generated fans from all over. Many upcoming movies are from either the same or affiliated genres: Transformers, Harry Potter and Stardust. Look further down the road and you'll see offerings such as Batman, Star Trek and Wolverine. Hollywood, it seems, is tapping into what some call the Fandom Phenomenon: groups of people from widely different backgrounds coming together to celebrate the stories and characters they love.

The local fans are no less passionate. The past five years have seen numerous events and conventions that serve as venues for fans to meet, greet, connect and celebrate.

But what makes these events truly interesting are the fans themselves. These are people inspired by imagination and touched by creativity, who choose to let their respective fandoms shape their lives. Don't let the costumes, quoted lines, quaint mannerisms and affectations, and the obsession with merchandise fool you.  Take a chance and engage one (or two or three) in conversation; you'll be surprised to see how lucid and grounded they actually are--and you'll find they're witty too! Take the time to stroll around the exhibits, greet the characters in costume and find out exactly how their fandoms have set their imaginations on fire and touched their hearts. Explore the activities offered in this event: play a game or two, have yourself sorted into a House, learn the Vulcan Salute. You may be surprised to find that you're actually a fan at heart.

With such a following, it is no surprise that outfits like Rockwell Power Plant Mall, Level Up! Games, Dream FM, and Fandom Cafe have supported this event.  It is open to the public.  And the entrance, like imagination, is free.  For more information, please log on to http://newworlds. ph/.

On July 9-15, get the chance to get together with like minds and celebrate what you love at the Rockwell Power Plant Mall!  The New Worlds Alliance, in conjunction with Rockwell Power Plant Mall, Level Up! Games, Dream FM, Fandom Cafe, presents New Worlds: Transformed.

Face Painting Fun

Lemon and I had our faces painted during the recent ToyCon at the Megatrade Hall. We had so much fun! At crush pa namin ni Lemon yung artist na nag paint ng face namin. Hehe...

And oh, muntik pa ko mapaaway dahil sa face paint namin. There was this a$$ of a manong na mukhang ugat ng puno ang nagcomment ng "ano ba yang pinaggagagawa nyo sa mukha nyo?!?" I looked back and shouted back, "pakialam mo, panget mo!" Haay... Oh well. Mukha pa lang karma na. Halata bang napikon ako? Hehe...

Ah basta. What's important is that Lemon had fun. ;)

Kitties for Adoption

previously labeled Dawn. Twilight does not have a mask on both her eyes.

Our year-old kitty, Cleo, gave birth to 4 healthy babies on March 25, 2007. At first we're optimistic that we (or should I say, I) could handle having six cats in the house. Unfortunately, times are tough and I'm not home most of the time. After sleepless nights and tearful conversations with Lemon, we've decided to have these wonderful kitties adopted by loving owners. It breaks my hear to see Lemon sad, but I had to make this choice. We would keep the kittens who won't be adopted in a month. I guess that's a sign strong enough. =)

For those who may be interested to adopt a kitten, kindly leave me a message here. These cats already have their rabies shots.

Oh BTW, A friend already expressed her interest in adopting Midnight.

TAG! I'm it!!! And I'm Tagging Yancey, Mark Joseph, Casey, Edrei, Emyr, Maya and Nick.

By this time I think you already know the drill. Write 7 random facts/habits about you, then tag 7 persons to do the same. So here goes...

1. Half of my brain is occupied by sci-fi, the other half is occupied by everything else.

2. I must have at least a cup of strong coffee a day of i'll go limp.

3. I was a pescovegan for one-and-a-half years.

4. I have sensitive teeth. I can't bite into an ice cream stick. It could kill me.

5. I have big ugly feet. At least I have feet. Heh..

6. I'm a frustrated guitarist, painter, writer, and chef. Real life is a bitch.

7. My musical preferences span 5 decades. I have very strong opinions on music types, or genres as we call 'em.

Now that wasn't so hard, was it? Now I'm tagging Yanz, Mark, Caz, Red, Emyr, Maya and Nick. Sorry guys. You're it!!!

TAGCOM

March 12, various characters flooded Araneta Expo. There were anime people, Star Wars people, Star Trek People, Superheroes, sentai people, and others. Need I say that there were a couple of vampires? =)

I love events such as this. Here's where I can be the nuthead I usually cannot be around normal people.

Thanks Caz dear, for some of the pictures.

The Mummy (or Ramses the Damned)

Rating:★★★
Category:Books
Genre: Literature & Fiction
Author:Anne Rice
I recently re-read the book to prepare for the 4th Gathering of AnneRicePhilippines. Read at your own risks. Corrections? Kindly point them out. I'm too sleepy to edit this "review."

Disclaimer: I have this one-sided and unconditional love for Ricean Vampires so this "review" may not reflect a sane person's opinions, nor those of the group. In short, it's me, it's not the book. =D

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILER!!!

WARNING: too random x_x

The Mummy, or Ramses the Damned, is a stand-alone historical-horror novel by Anne Rice, first published in 1989. Taking place during the early twentieth century, it follows the collision between a British archeologist's family and a resurrected mummy.

- From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

*long sigh*

I've always loved Anne Rice' works, especially those belonging to the Vampire Chronicles. With this one however, I find my insatiable thirst quite unsatisfied. I felt betrayed at the book's end, felt like I've been let down. It was a fast read. And unlike majority of Anne's works, Ramses was built heavily from the very start.

Well I guess that's one of the story's major faults. It took off with a bang and ended with a loud thud. The unveiling of plot/s failed to sustain the thrill built from the very start.

The story's set during the Edwardian Age when adult women can't go out without a chaperon. It involves a murdered filthy rich-shipping-magnate-turned archaeologist, his beautiful and exceptionally intelligent daughter who's engaged to this dashing but impoverished son of the Earl of Rutherford. *whew*

One thing about this story's it's power packed with beautiful people (bawal yata ang panget noon, siguro baby pa lang pinapatay na), not that I'm complaining. Reminds me of our tele-seryes (or fanta-seryes). Anyhoot...

Central to the tale are immortality, lust (not love, oh no), and beauty. Minor details involve bisexuality, vengeance and insatiable hunger.

Immortality was presented here more of like a curse than a gift. Nothing, as in nothing, can ever ever kill a creature once he/she/it has taken the elixir of life. It's a one-way ticket to eternity. I secretly hoped that there'd be an anti-elixir but there was none. I guess in a way that makes it more difficult for an individual to decide on taking the elixir. Every time I read a book I try to imagine my self in the story, sort of like the Choose Your Own Adventure bit (grabe na yata ang tanda ko). So yeah, in my mind I didn't take the elixir. If I did, even if I'm in bits and pieces (literally), I'd be alive, every little piece of me.

The characters didn't seem to mind. Two major characters where offered the elixir, and both of them took it. I banked my wits that Elliot wouldn't take it, even if from the very start of his adventures he's only interested in getting a vial from Ramses, that the entire experience will make him a better man with better judgment. How awfully disappointed I was when he finally decided to take it. I hope you f*****' choke on it you old pervert!, I thought. I can understand Julie though. She's in love with Ramses, and he's an immortal, with the mightiest libido ever!!! So there, match his eternal horny-ness, girl! hehe... Man I'm sick.

Unlike in this story, Vampiric immortality is less eternal, in a way. Vampires in Anne's stories, depending on his/her strength, die with sunlight, fire and drinking blood from a dead body. They can always end their lives when they tired of it. And oh, sunlight is like a life source for our immortals in Ramses, but it kills our Vampire immortals. Although the sun has a different effect to them, both immortals from Ramses and The Vampire Chronicles go "underground" when they don't feel like socializing anymore.

And then there's Cleopatra. I've always loved her. I think she kicks major @ss. Unfortunately in this story, she's a ravaging horny-ness girl with an appetite for murder. Loves breaking necks. She had $ex with boys and after much enjoyment, snap! She kills for fun.

And it's just peachy that ex-lovers Ramses and Cleopatra, Julie and Alex switched partners. One-two-three-pass! Pwede bang makisali? Julie, why can't you just love Alex kasi? I'm telling you, that guy's worth more than the shipping company you inherited from your father. Hay...

And in the end... well there's really no end here. Major cliffhanger. Again it was like Choose-Your-Own-Adventure, only the consequence of your final decision was never revealed. "The adventures of Ramses... will/shall continue..." but I guess it never will. As far as I know, Anne had stopped writing about this kind of stuff already.

So I guess it's up to me, and you, to finish this story, set in the dark swamps of our minds.

For Corky and Jana, and the rest of the pack

Had beer over Tacloban Lechon last night with my old beer buddies. Corky wanted to see the old pics again so I had to dig them up. What followed was an alcohol-powered nostalgia of our more than 6 years of worshiping the beer bottle, Marlboro Lights, good laughs, painting the faces of those who get too drunk, playing basketball when the sun starts to rise (we were still drinking), etcetera.

They asked me to scan some of the pics (no phonecams yet), and here they are. For you guys!

Corky and Jana, cheers!!! Kita kita na lang sa long table. Hehe!!!

I'm Ando Masahashi

Ando Masahashi

We are not special! We are Japanese!

Congratulations, you're Ando Masahashi! You're a practical, sensible,
person. You're also a bit of a nerd, though you haven't fully realized
that yet. You're a great person to go to for practical advice. You're
also a bit of a flirt.
Your best quality: Practicality -- you have your feet on the ground and know what's up.
Your worst quality: Finding every person you meet attractive (or maybe that's a good quality -- I don't know)

My test tracked 3 variables How you compared to other people
your age and gender:
free online datingfree online dating
You scored higher than 16% on Idealism
free online datingfree online dating
You scored higher than 19% on Nonconformity
free online datingfree online dating
You scored higher than 62% on Nerdiness

- - - - -

Bwehehe... would you look at that! I never realized I'm like Ando. Oh but I love him. I think he's as adorable as Hiro Nakamura. But first time I did this test, I was the very emo Peter Petrelli.

I'm a nerd, I knew it!

Wanna try it? Here's where you'll find it:

Reminiscing College

Social Transformation Advocacy towards Public Health, the group our batch started.

My officemate and I passed by the College of Public Health, UP Manila a few weeks ago. We're form the same college (but we're not batchmates), same course. It's funny how 6~ years of batch difference does not matter so much now. We learned that nothing much changed since our stay. Man I miss college, smell and all! Haha...

In the Spirit of the Lenten Season

HE WALKED

He could hear the crowds screaming "crucify" "crucify"...

He could hear the hatred in their voices,

These were his chosen people.

He loved them,

And they were going to crucify him.

He was beaten, bleeding and weakened... his heart was broken,

But still He walked.

He could see the crowd as he came from the palace.

He knew each of the faces so well.

He had created them.

He knew every smile, laugh, and shed tear,

But now they were contorted with rage and anger...his heart broke,

But still He walked.

Was he scared?

You and I would have been

So his humanness would have mandated that he was. He felt alone.

His disciples had left, denied, and even betrayed him.

He searched the crowd for a loving face and he saw very few.

Then he turned his eyes to the only one that mattered

And he knew that he would never be alone.

He looked back at the crowd, at the people who were spitting at him,

Throwing rocks at him and mocking him and he knew

That because of him, they would never be alone.

So for them, He walked.

The sounds of the hammer striking the spikes echoed through the crowd.

The sounds of his cries echoed even louder,

The cheers of the crowd, as his hands and feet

Were nailed to the cross, intensified with each blow.

Loudest of all was the still small voice inside his heart that whispered
"I am with you, my son",

And God's heart broke.

He had let his son walk.

Jesus could have asked God to end his suffering,

But instead he asked God to forgive.

Not to forgive him, but to forgive the ones who were persecuting him.

As he hung on that cross, dying an unimaginable death,

He looked out and saw, not only the faces in the crowd,

But also, the face of every person yet to be,

And his heart filled with love.

As his body was dying, his heart was alive.

Alive with the limitless, unconditional love he feels for each of us.

That is why He walked.

When I forget how much My God loves me,

I remember his walk.

When I wonder if I can be forgiven,

I remember his walk.

When I need to be reminded of how to live like Christ,

I think of his walk.

And to show him how much I love him,

I wake up each morning, turn my eyes to him,

And I walk.

To The Organization Called Anne Rice Philippines

A fellow blogger, and obviously an egotistic, self-righteous one, posted this article on his website.

* * * * * * *

I chanced upon a post in Maya’s blog and was caught by a name: Anne Rice.

Dear Maya, please forgive me for writing my opinion here. I agree with everyone out there that Anne Rice is the shit when it comes to writing, but I also believe that there are other writers out there who deserve more praise… much more praise.

Click, click and I was at their website. I know that we shouldn’t judge individuals right away, much more an organization, but, I read a few lines and was instantly LMAO.

Check it out:

Lo & behold I was proven wrong and hooked no doubt to her rapturous account and visceral storytelling of a confused soul and in his search for meaning in his life by way of Anne’s prose and imagery. Soon I found myself on the same quest as Louis, hoping to find the meaning of the different facets of my life and equally in the search of one who can mentor me in these matters. Little did I know that apart from an existentialist influence on me, Anne’s play and confluence of words and symbolism was slowly cultivating and nurturing my love for writing and for the written word as well. And in yielding to this love, a brand new search has taken the place anew of one that now encompasses the myriad areas of philosophy, history, architecture, religion, aesthetics, and every other form of information that I can get my hands on. -source

I used to write like this, believe it or not. I’m not claiming to be better than them, I just saw myself several months ago.

I have to thank a certain person: my English Geek and editor, who took her time reading (and badmouthing) my work, correcting each sentence and grammatical error. I learned a lot from her, and would be glad to learn more if only things turned out differently.

Like the members of Anne Rice Philippines, I too was influenced by Anne Rice’s writing. Her weight on my writing style’s so heavy that my editor never failed to tell me that I wrote (and still write) like a girl. While it’s good to be descriptive and visual, big-fucking-words like the ones used above only confuse readers.

My take? Keep it simple. Use big-fucking-words only if it’s the exact right word for your sentence. You readers aren’t as smart as they claim to be. They don’t have a dictionary in their pockets either. What’s the point of confusing your market? bash bash bash

Oh and before I forget, I’ve been a fan of Vampires since the early 90’s. Anne Rice never led or introduced me to them. All she did was provide me a better description of them.

Disclaimer: I’m not a good writer. I’m just a writer. The reason why I blog is because I like writing. I’m glad someone taught me early on. Otherwise, I would still be writing like that *points above then LOL*.

To Anne Rice Philippines, take my advice:
1. Fix your website. It fucking sucks. It’s even blasphemous. Gads~
2. Edit the “Musings” part, you know what, while you’re at it, edit everything! Keep it simple.
3. Frames are so last century. Think of something new. You can afford hosting but you can’t afford to improve the layout and content? Rawr~
4. Your organization bears the name of a great writer. Have some decency and at least come up with content worth reading (don’t forget to check your grammar!)
5. Believe me, Coven of the Articulate is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay of a long shot.
6. If you can’t do anything about your web-ugly-site, then disband. You bring Shame to Anne Rice. Oh, if you don’t want to disband, just delete your website. It’s goddamn blasphemous.

Gads~

HEROES

A nurse, a cheerleader, a stripper, a cop, a professor, a painter, a clerk, a politician, a smart kid and a convict. Ordinary people doing ordinary things, watching the world go by, knowing that they're just like everybody else. Probably, they're just like me. Or you.

Or not.

Spotted a friend in a coffee shop in the south, after I've donated what seemed like a gallon of blood at the nearby hospital, while waiting for the rest of my brothers and sisters from the late Talamasca to arrive. It was more or less a sedentary night when I rang him up (to confirm that it was really him, for my name-face recall sucks). "Look to your left. Outside." And there it was - a handsome face with a warm smile. It was really him.

Our conversation traversed the universe, even touching up on heaven and hell. And then, out of the blue, he mentioned this single word that caught my deafening ears. Heroes. He claimed that it was one of the best, if not the best, series that he'd seen. He mentioned something about a guy who paints the future when he's "high," a man who can fly, a teenager who can regenerate, a woman with an evil alterego, and a fellow who can somehow absorb the powers of the other "heroes." His enthusiasm was almost funny that I knew I just had to get my hands on this Heroes stuff. And I did.

Will and Grace can kiss their pedestal goodbye. I watched the first nine episodes from 5 am to what it seemed like early afternoon. I was screming at the end of the 9th episode. I wrestled with my pillows and kept on screaming under them. I want so bad to watch some more.

They don't have silly capes. They do not wear their undergarments on top of their trousers. They do not try to conceal their identity. They're your everyday person, and more.

I had to watch the episodes over and over again to try to contain my self. And I soon found out that this addiction's contagious. Like fire consuming dessert grass.

* * * * * * * * *

Weeks after, I was able to find a copy of Episodes 10-13. It came as a surprise no-occassion gift. I was ecstatic! But thern it was short-lived. Soon I was screaming my head off again. I was hooked! It's like giving a stick a day to a cigarette junkie.

* * * * * * * * *

Anne Rice Philippines was the newest member of The New Worlds Alliance. And so was Heroes Philippines. *gasp* In a second I was already a member, lurking in the shadows, trying to stay away from posts tagged as spoilers.

I attended the thon and was able to catch episodes 14-17. Countless gasps and imploding screams later, I was more hooked than ever. And the people who make up the group are charming and witty and funny. I love them already!

Then the launch happened. It was easily one of the best nights of my mundane life. Bands, chats, beer, Episode 1 - ah, clearly it was a foolproof event. But what I appreciate the most were the people from Heroes Philippines. They're just the most precious little devils. I spent the night laughing my a$$ out, relaxing to the beautiful noise the bands created, knocking over bottles of beer as if I haven't had one in a year. My slip-of-the-tongue suggestion to go to KTV afterwards materialized. My brother, who arrived just when the last band was almost done with their set, obviously had so much fun as well.

If only the night didn't have to end.

I can't help but but feel that I've found new brothers and sisters I'll definitely have fun with. Somehow a ray of light is peeping through my mundane existence. And it's a lovely feeling.

Lemon's 6th Birthday - My baby's now a big baby!

yeap, same cake as kris a.'s.

Venue 1: at her school. Prepared homemade chicken nuggets and fruit jello

Venue 2: At the office. Brought meaty spaghetti.

Venue 3: At Nanay's. Hardcore chilren's party.

At the end of the day, I got soooo tired. But then again that night, I was probably the happiest exhausted mum in the universe. I LOVE MY LEMON!

Prep Quiz Bee

Lemon was one of the representatives of her class in a quizbee hosted
by their school. She didn't win the contest but I'm mighty glad just as
well.She's my pride and joy!

My little giant baby is who you
call a natural. She does not like to spend hours studying. She'd rather
use the PC til her eyes pop out. Heehee... I love my Lemon!
