One time, Lemon and one of her playpals were talking. I couldn't help overhearing (are you kidding? I was dying to know!) what they were talking about. Lemon was apparently listening to DC Talk's music. Here's a summary:
Lemon: Ate ******, makinig ka, Christian [music] 'yan. (listen, that's Christian music!)
******: Hindi yan Christian! (That's not Christian!)
Lemon: Christian yan! Pakinggan mo, tungkol kay Jesus yung song. (That's Christian! Listen well, the song's about Jesus.)
*****: Hindi nga Christian 'yan! (No, that's not Christian!)
Lemon: (Napapahiya na) Eh ano 'yan? (Starting to get embarassed: Then what is it?)
******: Basta hindi Christian 'yan. Rock [music] 'yan eh. Hindi Christian ang Rock! (It's not Christian. Rock music cant be Christian!)
Lemon: Eh Christian Rock nga 'yan eh. (But that's Christian Rock!)
******: Hindi nga Christian 'yan. Iba ang Christian na kanta. Bawal yan sa Christians! (That's not Christian! Christians should not listen to that kind of music!)
Lemon: Ha? (Huh?)
******: May pinabasa sakin na book ang papa ko. "insert name of book here" ... (My dad made me read this book, "insert name of book here")
Lemon: Mommy, laro tayo ng trolley-trolley sa labas! (Mom, let's go outside and play with my trolley!)
No side comments from me for now. Sorry to disappoint you. =)
Okay, just one. If you teach your children values, please don't forget to teach them manners. =)
hmph. :-S
ReplyDeleteSigh. I've been fighting this fight for more than a decade, going "against the flow." Music, writing, movies, the works. Honestly, I'm getting a bit tired. So sad to get flak from the people who should be "on your side."
oh well, i'm just surprised that in this day and age, there are still those who teach "Rock Music is the Devil's Work"
ReplyDeleteit makes sense what Gary V's son said during one of their gigs (I think they were front act-ing for Switchfoot), if Rock and Roll is the Devil's music, then why don't we use that against him!
it just means that people doesnt bother to listen to the lyrics or try to know the meaning of the song... they judge the wholeness of the song by its genre..
ReplyDeleteduring mirc days, i used to use the nick "JesusFreak" and lots of Christians are telling me to change my nick because its blasphemous...
and when i showed the video Jesusfreak by dctalk.. their also first impression is that it is an anti-christ song.. but when i explain it to them... it became one of their favorite songs.. yung iba kasi ang definition ng Christian music ay yung hillsong music.. maraming CHristian rock bands out there waiting to be heard...
wait.. hehehehe
ReplyDeletekiddie talk pla yun..
aww kudos for lemon for knowing the true meaning of rock music!!!
Jars of Clay, Caedmon's Call, MercyMe, Switchfoot...
ReplyDeleteYou can see them in Christian music stores!
If only this Ate would follow and believe... with faith like a child's.
Hehehe. I see Lemon has promptly ignored Ate ******** after her last comment and asked you to play with her instead. She probably knew Ate ******** wasn't making much sense. :P
ReplyDeleteDC Talk. Gotta love 'em. <3
hahaha. oo nga. parang "ayaw na kitang kausap, laro na lang tayo mommy"
ReplyDeleteAwww, in my imagination, Lemon flashes the most innocent smile and reveals a pair of fangs and flits away in a puff of smoke.
ReplyDeletei remember when i was 7, my dad gave me this cassette tape of a christian metal/rock band. it sounded like P.O.D. (payable on death << christian metal), you'll really enjoy the sound and all until you carefully listen to the lyrics.... christian band pala =) i'm proud of lemon. congrats lynn! (^_^)
ReplyDeleteoi! MercyMe lang hindi ko kilala...
ReplyDeletein pa rin ako sa usapan!
okay lang yun...
ReplyDeletetragic ang story ni ate eh, imagine having a name that's all asterisks! hahahaha!
mercy me's i can only imagine is such a beautiful song that i have a friend who cried listening to that song...
ReplyDeletecaedmon's call's love alone is also awesome!! one of the few mp3 in my player na di ko p napapalitan
ReplyDeletehehe... with a mother like me... :D wait, that's scary.. hehe..
ReplyDeletesimple lang naman. if the song glorifies Christ, then it's Christian. yun na yun in Lemon's eyes (or ears).
in fairness to Ate, she's only 10. So I don't take it against her personally. I don't think may sarili na syang opinions. As adults we are totally responsible for what our kids believe in.
ReplyDeletehehe... yeah. she'd rather believe me, her mom, who listens to Christian Rock and has the patience to tell her what those songs are telling her.
ReplyDeletehahaha... di ako ang nagturo jan ha. *whistle whistle*
ReplyDeletehahaha.. yeah. you should see how horrified this Ate is everytime Lemon and I would listen to the OST of Queen of the Damned. Hahaha...
ReplyDeletethanks! yeah when you're a young mom you have the energy to be there for your little munster, talking to her, sharing with her what you love to do. i don't think Lemon and I will experience generation gap.
ReplyDeleteIt's all in the lyrics really, and how one delivers the song. And in the end, it's the total package. It's really irritating how judgmental people can get, esp strict Christians. No wonder some people hate Bible studies.
hahaha... Nick talaga! :D
ReplyDeletehahahaha... korek! hahaha... Nick, you're improving! hahaha...
ReplyDeletei love Third Day as well, and I listen to Sonic Flood too. There's a lot to discover out there.
ReplyDeleteWahahaha!
ReplyDeleteDear Ate Charo,
Tawagan mo nalang ako sa pangalang ***********.
That's true! I just discovered Casting Crowns, Relient K and Rush of Fools. The former two are available in House of Praise and Music One. :)
ReplyDeleteyay! more and more people are listening to Christian Rock. in it's own special way, it reaches out to "non-mainstream" believers more effectively than when you try to "teach" or "preach to them". i have been on that road. when people try to preach to me The Gospel, I shy away. Growing up, those religious people strike me as perfectly judgmental beings who're almost always ready to bite me just because I am not as "religious".
ReplyDeleteyup! sonicflood "i surrender all" and third day's "do u hear what i hear?" kasama dun sa mga di pa nagagasgas na mp3 sa mp3 player ko.. kahit christmas song yung sa 3rd day...
ReplyDeleteWAHAHAHAHA!
ReplyDeleteMine are Jars of Clay's "The Eleventh Hour", "Faith Like A Child", "Tea and Sympathy", "Disappear", "Oh My God", "Flood", "Worlds Apart", and most especially, "Love Song For A Savior". Also MecyMe's "I Can Only Imagine" - such a wonderful song.
ReplyDeleteLahat yan di ko tinatanggal sa MP3 player ko. Hehehe.
oh where do i start... haha.. i'm really actively promoting Christian Rock Music to my friends. =)
ReplyDeletehindi ako makapag-comment... kainis! hehehehe
ReplyDeletekung kaya nila, kaya din ng Christians...! (basta wag lang kasalanan ha)
hehehe... bakit nman di ka maka-comment?
ReplyDeleteI'd like to take a moment to cite the lyrics of my favorite HYMN of all time:
ReplyDeleteI have climbed highest mountain
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you
I have run
I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
These city walls
Only to be with you
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in her fingertips
It burned like fire
This burning desire
I have spoke with the tongue of angels
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
I was cold as a stone
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
I believe in the kingdom come
Then all the colors will bleed into one
Bleed into one
Well yes I'm still running
You broke the bonds and you
Loosed the chains
Carried the cross
Of my shame
Of my shame
You know I believed it
But I still haven't found what I'm looking for
exactly... nice song!!!
